Why short cycles matter

A furnace that starts and stops every minute never finishes a heat cycle, wears parts faster and leaves rooms uneven.

Safe checks

Change a visibly dirty filter and open supply registers. Then watch one full cycle. If it still slams on and off, stop adding thermostat setpoints.

Cause categories

Overheating from poor airflow, an oversized cabinet on small ducts, or a control that does not see a completed flame.

Short cycling on a recently installed furnace can be an oversizing or duct issue rather than a worn part. Mention the install date.

What not to do

Do not tape over a limit switch or close off returns to push air elsewhere.

What to request

Describe the cycle time and any recent filter or renovation changes. Use furnace repair. If the cabinet is old and this is one of several faults, use repair-versus-replace as well.

Oversizing and ducts

A cabinet that is too large for the ducts reaches limit quickly and shuts down. That looks like a broken furnace and is sometimes an old install problem rather than a new failed part.

Mention renovations, closed rooms or a furnace that was replaced in the last few years. Those facts change the first tests.

Questions

Can I keep using a furnace that short cycles?
You can limp through a day after changing a filthy filter. Repeated cycling still needs diagnosis.
