A short fall checklist

Correct filter, clearance around the cabinet, outdoor terminations free of debris, thermostat set to heat, and a note of any noise from last season.

After the first snow

Check high-efficiency intake and exhaust again. A buried termination can lock a furnace out on a pressure switch.

What the first long run should tell you

New rattle, a burning-dust smell that does not clear after a day, or a furnace that will not complete a cycle is a reason to request service before January.

What this checklist is not

It is not combustion diagnosis and it is not permission to bypass a safety switch.

If you want a visit

Request furnace maintenance for a planned check. Request furnace repair if the furnace already failed.

Carbon monoxide alarms are not optional extras

Test the alarms when you change the filter. A furnace check does not replace working alarms.

If an alarm sounds, leave the troubleshooting list and treat the house as a safety call.
