Repair vs Replace an Air Conditioner

When a cooling repair should become a replacement conversation.

Separate small parts from sealed-circuit failures

A capacitor or fan motor is usually a repair. A leaking coil or failed compressor on an older matched pair is where replacement of both indoor and outdoor sides deserves a look.

Matching if you replace only the outdoor unit

Ask whether the indoor coil stays. A mismatched coil is a common reason a new condenser still feels weak.

Season length is not a reason to ignore ice

Airdrie’s cooling season is brief, which can justify waiting on a small repair. It does not justify running an iced system or ignoring a compressor that will not start.

House-side variables

Electrical circuit, pad, and furnace blower capacity travel with a replacement. They may already exist on a repair.

Where to request work

AC repair for diagnosis. AC installation when you want a new pair. The cost guide to see which line items belong on a replacement quote.

Timing if the house can wait

If cooling is weak but present and the failure is a small electrical part, waiting a day for a scheduled repair is reasonable.

If there is no cooling and a heat wave is already in the house, say so on the request. That is dispatch information, not a promise of a specific arrival window.

Questions

Should I replace the furnace at the same time as the AC?
Only if the furnace is near the end of its life or the indoor coil change makes a paired system cleaner.
