Signs that usually belong together

Age plus repeated repairs, visible rust or soot, rooms that never recover on cold nights, rising service frequency, or a safety finding such as a compromised heat exchanger.

Age alone is a planning item if the furnace still heats safely. Symptoms without a safety finding can still be a repair.

Repair history as a decision variable

One igniter in ten years is not a pattern. Two major parts in one heating season is. Bring the list when you request help.

Safety versus comfort

Fuel smell, soot, or a carbon monoxide alarm is not a wait-and-see sign. Comfort complaints without those findings can be diagnosed first.

Timing

Collecting a replacement quote in shoulder season is different from a January lockout. If you recognize several signs and the furnace still runs, request the quote while you can still choose timing.

Where to go

Furnace replacement when you want equipment scoped. Furnace repair when the immediate problem is no heat. Repair-versus-replace for the decision frame.

How many signs are enough

One sign is a reason to watch and service. Several signs plus age is a reason to collect a replacement quote while the furnace still runs.

A safety finding is enough on its own.

Keep the repair list with the furnace. The next visit is faster when that list is not reconstructed from memory in January.

Questions

My furnace is old but still running. Should I replace it?
Not on age alone. Plan ahead so a mid-January failure is not your first planning session. Maintenance and a realistic remaining-life discussion help.
