Heat Pump Cost in Alberta
Cost components for air-source heat pump projects in Alberta homes.

What a heat-pump quote has to contain
Cold-climate outdoor equipment, indoor coil or air handler, backup heat, controls, electrical, pad, line set and commissioning in both heating and cooling.
A sticker for the outdoor unit alone is not a project price.
Why cold-climate equipment changes the number
Heating capacity at a stated low outdoor temperature is part of the price discussion. A milder-climate unit can look cheaper and then lean on backup heat every cold night.
Dual-fuel with an existing furnace and all-electric backup are different electrical and control scopes.
House-side costs
Panel capacity, circuit work, pad height for snow, line-set routing and whether ducts can move the air. Those items often dwarf the difference between two outdoor-unit prices.

Comparing a heat pump to furnace-plus-AC
Put backup heat, electrical, pad, controls and commissioning on both sides. Then the comparison is two complete systems, not two product photos.
Programs and timing
Keep any grant or financing separate from equipment scope so a closed intake window does not hide an incomplete quote. See the incentives article for current program status.
Request heat-pump installation when you want the job scoped.
Backup heat is a cost line
Dual-fuel backup uses a furnace you may already own. Electric backup may need panel work and has a different operating cost on cold nights.
Leaving backup off the quote to make the number smaller does not leave backup off the house.
Commissioning in heating mode cannot wait until July. If the install happens in summer, ask how heating mode will be verified.
Questions
- Are heat pumps cheaper than a furnace plus AC?
- Sometimes as a combined system, sometimes not. Compare full scopes, including backup heat, rather than outdoor-unit stickers.
